Automotive
Complex components, new materials
Ever lighter and more powerful engines with ever less fuel consumption and improved CO² balance – the future of the automotive industry focuses on light-weight construction and hybrids. In field of tension the industry searches its remedy in new engine and body designs which drives the development of new materials.
Modern fibre composite plastics (FCP) are currently being used for a broad range of industrial applications due to reasons of efficiency, weight, tensile strength or dynamics. With their specific characteristics they extend the group of classic light-weight construction materials such aluminium- and titanium-alloys. FCP or also multi-material systems, a mixture of FCP and metallic materials, are therefore no longer reserved exclusively for the aerospace industry, motorsport and other high-end applications. Noteworthy in particular is the large growth in the automotive and commercial vehicle technology.
FCP are applied everywhere where high specific tensile strength with low weight and highly dynamic or energy efficient processes are to be found. When machining CFRP, GFRP and stacks (CFRP-metal- layer bonding) generally the cutting edge quality and the wear resistance of the tool material are of vital importance in order to prevent component damage. For these demanding materials Guhring provides special tooling solutions in solid carbide, coated carbide and with PCD cutting edges, adapted to the respective material structure and ensuring chip evacuation as well as consistent hole diameters.
